The Trunk Road and Bus Operations Directorate is responsible for carrying out two main areas of work:
- Management and maintenance of the Trunk Road network infrastructure in Scotland and Co-ordination of Response to Emergencies affecting Transport
- Delivery of Concessionary Travel and development of Integrated Ticketing including Distribution of Grants to Bus Operators throughout Scotland
The Trunk Road network comprises of around 3,400 km of strategic routes and is the largest asset Scottish Ministers own (£15 billion Net asset value).
The Directorate contributes to Transport Scotland's delivery priorities of:
- Improved connections across Scotland
- Better journey times, better reliability
- Greener transport alternatives, reduced emissions
- Enhanced safety, more innovation
The Trunk Road and Bus Operations Directorate comprises of around 150 staff within the following teams:
- Asset Management and Standards - responsible for asset management planning, trunk road standards, systems management, ICT services, financial planning and budgetary control, materials and quality assurance. Also responsible for the Performance Audit Group commission
- Bridges & Structures Team - responsible for the maintenance, construction and safety of bridges and other structures across the Trunk Road network
- Concessionary Travel and Integrated Ticketing Unit - has responsibility for delivering concessionary travel schemes across Scotland for the elderly, disabled and young. They are also responsible for the delivery of Bus Service Operator Grants and have both policy and delivery responsibilities for smart and integrated ticketing across Scotland
- Network Administration Team - takes responsibility for administering responses from across the Trunk Road area of the Directorate for Freedom of Information requests, Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial and official Correspondence. This area is also responsible for administering abnormal load movements, third party claims and damage to crown property and promoting Road and Traffic Orders
- Network Maintenance Team - is responsible for keeping Scotland's Trunk Road Network functioning through day to day repair and upkeep, structural and winter maintenance and minor improvements
- Network Operations - responsible for 5 main business areas including Traffic Scotland Service, Transport Resilience, Strategic Road Safety, Development Management, and Operations Services
