A80 Bridge demolition completed early

Demolition of a bridge as part of the major new motorway scheme improving the link between Glasgow and Stirling has been completed ahead of schedule.

The A80 North Road Bridge demolition works were originally planned to be carried out over two weekends, 9th and 16th October 2009, but were finished safely and successfully within two nights by Transport Scotland’s contractors Highway Management Construction (HMC).

The works included overnight road closures and reduced running lanes on the A80 during the day to allow HMC safe site access and control of the demolition.

Michelle Rennie, Head of Branch, Transport Scotland said:

"We are pleased to see this significant milestone in the M80 project completed ahead of schedule. Transport Scotland strives to minimise disruption to road users and HMC has been instrumental in supporting this through their quick and efficient works."

Early completion of the works means that the anticipated closures of the A80 next weekend will not be required.
 
Transport Scotland and HMC would like to thank all construction personnel for their hard work, North Lanarkshire Council for their co-operation, the local residents, and the travelling public for their patience whilst these essential works were carried out.

The A80 is an essential part of the trunk road network in central Scotland and one of the most heavily used. The M80 Stepps to Haggs project will complete the missing gap between Stirling and Glasgow bringing real benefits to the surrounding communities across the central belt as a whole.
