Apprentices working on the M74 Completion scheme were presented with their certificates by Transport Minister Keith Brown last week, signalling the successful end of a two year modern apprenticeship course.
Six apprentices from the M74 Completion Project Modern Apprentice scheme attended the event, collecting qualifications in a range of skills to become formally recognised Plant Operators, Scaffolders and Formworkers (shuttering joiners). The Formworkers are also pioneering the way for this apprenticeship being the first students in Scotland to undertake this qualification.
Keith Brown said
“I am delighted to present these apprentices with their certificates in a range of lifelong skills, including the first ever Formwork apprentices.
“The M74 Completion is proving instrumental in providing improved access to economic, employment and education opportunities for Scotland, as well as the regeneration of east Glasgow. The project has supported up to 900 construction jobs during its development, in addition to which private investment of £14m and nearly 700 jobs is being secured by Clyde Gateway as part of their Glasgow East developments.
“These apprentices, from across the east end of Glasgow and south west Scotland communities, are among the first to benefit from these education opportunities and I congratulate them on their life changing achievement. I am pleased that this prospect arose from this exciting public funded transport project and I wish them all the best for the future.”
David Welsh, Interlink M74 Joint Venture Project Director said:
”Interlink M74 JV is delighted to have been in a position to put these young people through the Modern Apprenticeships Scheme, on this complex civil engineering project. The M74 Employability Partnership is another example of working together with our customer and stakeholders to the benefit of the project and the people of Glasgow.”
The modern apprentice scheme was deployed as a result of the M74 Employability Partnership, which is a collaboration of Glasgow East Regeneration Agency, Glasgow City, South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire councils in conjunction with Interlink M74 JV, the joint venture responsible for the delivery of the new motorway, and their partnership with Construction Skills Scotland and Bridgend Training Facility.
Of the ten apprentices to graduate the course, one has secured a move to Australia on the strength of his qualification, another has gained employment in Manchester whilst the remainder will seek to remain employed locally.
