Work on the M80 Stepps to Haggs upgrade moves forward this week when construction of the main carriageway gets underway.
Highway Management (Scotland) Ltd, Transport Scotland’s contractor for the £320 million project, will carry out night-time works on localised sections of the route. Other works will then be carried out during the day including earthworks, drainage and fencing.
To protect the works area, a temporary speed restriction of 40 mph between Moodiesburn and Haggs will be introduced on 16 April and this will remain in place until the project is completed in 2011. This limit is enforceable and will be monitored by police patrols.
Michelle Rennie, Transport Scotland’s Head of Branch, Construction said:
"The A80 is a vital part of the trunk road network in central Scotland and this project will bring real benefits to the local communities by completing the missing gap between Stirling and Glasgow.
"Whilst we are focusing some of our efforts on night-time working at this time for safety reasons and in a bid to reduce congestion, this speed limit reduction will apply throughout the day. This is essential for the safety of road users and road workers alike. Consequently we would ask drivers to pay careful attention when passing through the works area."
Hugh O’Connor, HMS General Manager, said:
"We appreciate that these works may cause some delays particularly at peak periods and we thank road users for their patience while we carry out these vital works."
Early preparatory works have already started along the route and the new motorway to is expected to be fully opened in 2011.
Measures have been put in place to record noise levels from the works and these will be monitored throughout.
