Hammering home the safety message

Pupils watch as contractor
demonstrates tools

One of the men building the M74 Completion project - the biggest transport project currently being built in Scotland - took time out to visit local primary school children recently and tell them about his work.

A joiner for contractor Interlink M74, Hugh McFadzen, addressed the pupils at St Fillans Primary School, Glasgow. The themes of the visit were practical construction and health and safety so Hugh decided to demonstrate the safe use of the contents of a toolbox.

The visit was organised by Chris Devlin from Glasgow City Council, who along with South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire Councils, are Transport Scotland's partners in the M74 Completion project.

After Hugh's informative talk, the children were then given the opportunity to demonstrate their own practical construction skills by hammering four inch nails into large chunks of six by two.

The morning was a huge success, providing the children with a fun and informative introduction to the construction industry and the health and safety considerations of which the professionals have to be aware.
