One of our key considerations has been to plan and manage construction work on the project in order to minimise any negative impact on users and local communities. An extensive consultation process was undertaken to identify suitable construction compound locations and develop a Code of Construction Practice that contractors must adhere to.
The bulk of construction activity will take place from barges in the Firth of Forth, however, through the Forth Crossing Bill Transport Scotland is also seeking provision for three construction compounds which are required to build the scheme.
These compounds would be located in:
Site compounds will be securely fenced off with well maintained fencing and security cameras if required. Lighting at the compound will be designed and directed to reduce visual intrusion and light spillage for nearby properties.
The Code of Construction Practice covering all compounds and all construction activities has been prepared in consultation with local stakeholders and submitted in support of the Parliamentary Bill.
Echline Compound
It is anticipated that the main construction compound will be at South Queensferry and construction of the bridge and southern approach roads will be managed from that location.
The compound will include an area for storage of equipment, a car park for approx 300 vehicles and a two-storey block of management offices including staff facilities.
There are two options being considered, Echline Field East (Option 1) and West (Option 2).
Echline Field East is owned by the Scottish Government and would provide operational advantages. The alternative, Echline Field West, would involve new land acquisition, but reduces the impact on local communities. Option 2 would be preferred should Parliament, as part of the Bill, provide powers for Transport Scotland to compulsorily acquire this land.
Ferrytoll Compound
The compound at North Queensferry is anticipated to be a satellite compound used to manage the construction of the northern bridge viaduct, the Ferrytoll Junction and the A90 improvements.
The site will include office and welfare facilities, storage for plant and machinery and car parking for approximately 90 staff.
Kirkliston Compound
The compound near Kirkliston is likely to be located to the north of the M9 Spur and will manage the construction of the upgrades to Junction 1A. Facilities will include office and welfare facilities, storage for plant and machinery and car parking for approximately 75 staff.
