Meet the Team - Sophie

Name: Sophie

Position: Site Supervisor now recently promoted to Project Officer

Site: Govan Ironworks

Nationality: Scottish

How did you become involved in archaeology?

I matriculated as an English student, but became interested in archaeology through taking it as an outside subject. This fitted in with my busy social life. After graduating with full honours in archaeology I got my first job with GUARD at the Midross Golf course, Loch Lomond. This was a good training ground as it was a multi-phased site with lots interesting archaeology. After this great start, I got a job with Headland Archaeology, at Finneston Street, another pottery site in Glasgow.  Since then I have worked with Headland across Scotland and Northern Ireland, including a site of national importance to Scotland, Culduthel, Inverness.

What aspect of the job do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy the on-site banter and the physical aspects of the job.  Being outdoors is really important to me.

What has been your most interesting find?

A Viking glass bead, which was found when I working for ACS in Woodstown, Waterford.

What are your interests outside work?

I enjoy knitting, rock climbing, cycling and in-house gardening, and am currently growing gherkins in my house.
