Dig Diary for August 2007

18 August 2007

The first few weeks of the excavation were spent machine-stripping the vegetation from Areas 1, 2 and parts of Areas 4 and 5.  Modern overburden and demolition material was then machine stripped from the site under the observation of archaeologists.  This took place until the first archaeologically significant horizon was reached.  Once the outlines of walls and surfaces were revealed machining stopped and hand cleaning of the site commenced.  During early August the team consisted of five people, increasing to eleven full-time staff by the end of August.

Hand cleaning of the site concentrated on Area 1 during August, located to the east of MacKinlay Street.  Area 1 comprises Rosehill Cottages, two early 19th century adjoining sandstone cottages, and the earliest development on the site, and mid to late 19th century brick and stone tenements running alongside Pollokshaws Road and the eastern end of Devon Street.  Area 2 comprises a sunken courtyard to the rear of Rosehill, and the basements of tenements on MacKinlay Street.

Once the modern overburden had been removed from the site it became clear that Rosehill was in fact situated on a hill.  The cottages were built on an outcrop of clay at a higher level than the rest of the site.  The cottages do not appear to have significant basements, and the remains comprise sandstone foundations that would have held up wooden floorboards.  The cottages were each of two storeys and had spiral staircases to the rear.
