Areas 4 and 5, to the west of MacKinlay Street, were machined under archaeological supervision.

In Area 4, a complex of well preserved cobbled surfaces, brick and stone wall foundations, storage areas and communal coalbunkers were revealed.

The tenements fronting onto MacKinlay Street and Devon Street had substantial foundations. The ground level in the backlots to the rear of the tenements appears to have been lower than the street level to the front. Basements could be directly accessed from the backlots down a short flight of stairs. We have found repaired sandstone stairs that had become worn, and basement windows that originally had metal bars.

It is thought that many of these basements were used as communal laundries. In some of the basements its possible to see where sinks and drains were located.

We have also found evidence of a copper, a domestic boiler for producing hot water for washing.

Area 5 mainly comprises Queen’s Park Terrace, fronting onto Eglinton Street. This grand tenement building was almost completely demolished down to basement level in the early 1980s and the majority of the building material removed at the time of demolition. We will continue to excavate this area in the coming weeks.

Further excavation in Areas 1 and 2 revealed the base of the sandstone foundations at Rosehill and more of the early drainage system.

The foundations had slots cut into them for drains.

We excavated test pits in Area 2 using a machine. The aim of this exercise was to examine what lay beneath the cobbles and early tarmac surface in this area.
