Uncovering the Past: The M74 Dig (25 January 2008 - 25 July 2008)
‘Uncovering the Past’ investigated the fascinating archaeological excavations at three sites along the route of the M74 motorway and looked at the lives of those who lived and worked in the area.
The exhibition used finds, maps and photographs from the digs at the Caledonian Pottery, Govan Iron Works and Pollokshaws Road Tenements to explore Glasgow and South Lanarkshire’s past.
Uncovering Industry: The M74 Dig (8 August 2008- 16 February 2009)
‘Uncovering Industry’ charted the progression of Glasgow’s industrial heritage from 1800 onwards and explored a range of industries from the cottons and silks of Falfield Mills to the teapots and piggy banks of the Caledonian Pottery.
The exhibition used memories from residents and videos of archaeologists at work to bring the M74Dig to life and explored the history of the industrial heartland of Glasgow, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire.
Dig Discovery Centre
The M74 Dig Discovery Centre was based at Scotland Street School Museum and accompanied the exhibitions. It offered an opportunity to handle finds from the M74 archaeological investigations, as well as to consult reports, maps, plans, old archive photographs and reference books on the history of the area surrounding the route of the M74 motorway. It was a unique and unusual opportunity to see behind the scenes of an archaeological dig as this type of material is rarely easily accessible to the public.
Past Lives: The Kingston Area
‘Past Lives: The Kingston Area’ was an exhibition developed as a part of the Oral History Programme for Scotland Street School Museum’s Past Pupil’s Day 2008. It was intended to engage former residents of the local area which was being excavated. The exhibition consisted of photographs provided by former residents and pupils depicting the area around Scotland Street School Museum.
Travelling Exhibition
A travelling exhibition was developed with various community groups to explore perceptions of archaeology and to advertise the M74 Discovery Centre. Panels were produced by Glendale Primary School, M74 Completion Appointed Agents, West of Scotland Archaeology Service, Gorbalites 50+ and HAPCA.
The exhibition was toured around the venues of Kelvingrove Museum, Gorbals Library and Learning Centre, Rutherglen Library and Scotland Street School Museum.
