The Cathcart Road overbridge will carry Cathcart Road over both carriageways of the M74 allowing motorway traffic to pass below Cathcart Road, leaving this important local road back on its pre-existing route unaffected by the new motorway.
The two span bridge will be built using ‘top-down’ construction methods. To do this, existing services will be diverted and a temporary realignment of Cathcart Road will be constructed to the east of the existing road. Once traffic has been diverted on to this, reinforced concrete piles to support the west half of the new bridge will be constructed. The reinforced concrete deck for the new bridge will be cast on to these piles, using the existing ground to support the deck until it has gained strength. Traffic will then be diverted onto the west half of the deck and a similar process followed for the east section.
There will be some minor impacts on existing traffic using Cathcart Road during construction but this construction method will minimise disruption and allow two-way traffic to be maintained at all times.
