A702 Hartside Corner Carriageway Realignment

Project Summary:
The project is located on the A702 trunk road at Hartside Corner approximately 0.5km south of the junction with the B7055. The scheme consists of the widening, horizontal and vertical realignment of 0.5km of single carriageway, bringing it up to current design standards.

What's involved?
The project is located on the A702 trunk road at Hartside Corner approximately 0.5km south of the junction with the B7055.  The scheme consists of the widening, horizontal and vertical realignment of 0.5km of single carriageway, bringing it up to current design standards.

Project benefits
At present the section of trunk road is substantially below the current road design standards.  The carriageway cross-section, vertical and horizontal alignments and therefore forward visibility are all substandard. The scheme will improve forward visibility, ride quality and surface drainage thereby increasing overall road user safety.

Status
These details are available from the programme document.

Impact on travel
This section of carriageway is the main link between the M74 at Abington and Edinburgh. There will be some disruption and delays to road users.

Traffic management
Where possible, the use of single lane working controlled via traffic signals and convoy working will be utilised to allow the safe construction of the works. However, traffic diversions may also be required for some parts of the construction.

In the interest of safety of the workforce and motorists, a temporary speed restriction of 30 mph and at times 10 mph will be in force on the A702 in both directions.

Motorists should allow extra time for their journeys or consider alternative travel arrangements.

Information signs will be placed in advance of and during the works to warn the public of the road works and any delays likely to be encountered. Diversion signs will be displayed when appropriate.

Environmental impact
The carriageway realignment will impact upon existing agricultural land. The environmental value of these areas will be assessed and mitigation measures identified prior to commencement of the works on site.  The design of the surface water drainage system will be carried out in consultation with SEPA and potential environmental impacts accounted for.
