Project Summary: 
This project involves the construction of a new 5.3 kilometre stretch of the A75, to the east of Stranraer, in Dumfries and Galloway, providing improved overtaking facilities in both the east and westbound directions.

The scheme is needed to:

  • Improve the operational performance, level service and safety on the A75
  • Improve and increase the number of overtaking opportunities
  • Incorporate the needs of cyclist and pedestrians 
  • Maintain the asset value of the A75, mitigate environmental impacts of works
  • Achieve good value for money.

Status
Draft Orders published in 2006.  Objections were received and subsequently resolved.  Made Orders were published on 20 November 2009.

Public Exhibition
A Public Exhibition was be held in Dunragit village Hall, Dunragit on 22 August 2006. The exhibition provided an opportunity for the public to comment on the proposed scheme.

Impact on travel
Since the project is working predominately off road, there will be only minor disruption to traffic at the time it is tied-in to the current road.

Traffic management
As most of the construction work will be off-line, traffic management will only be required at the tie-ins. The contractor will be required to produce a traffic management plan to demonstrate that delays will be kept to a minimum.

Environmental impact
There are considerable environmental impacts. 

  • There are Scheduled Sites, Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM), in the vicinity of the works. 
  • Historic Scotland has granted permission to undertake the works. 
  • Extensive archaeological survey shall be undertaken by Historic Scotland prior to the works. 
  • Environmental surveys have been undertaken and it has been identified that mitigation measures shall be required for a number of protected species
