M8 Associated Network Improvement Study

Project Summary:
This study is looking at a series of options for capacity improvements on sections of the M73, M74 and M8 adjacent to Baillieston and Maryville interchanges as a result of changes to east-west traffic patterns once the extension to the M74 and improvements to the M8 are in place.

What's involved?
This study is looking at a series of options for capacity improvements on sections of the M73, M74 and M8 adjacent to Baillieston and Maryville interchanges as a result of changes to east-west traffic patterns once the extension to the M74 and improvements to the M8 are in place. For more information on the works in this region please see the M8 Baillieston to Newhouse Project.

A range of strategies are being examined, from the application of demand management techniques within the existing carriageway, to the introduction of hard shoulder running and free flow links between junctions.

The close proximity of these two major interchanges (Baillieston and Maryville) results in lengths on carriageway between the slip roads of less than one kilometre. This currently makes weaving and lane-changing manoeuvres between the M74 and M73 difficult and also currently causes some congestion.

The capacity of the trunk road network is also constrained by both the proximity of these junctions and the presence of the at-grade Baillieston Roundabout.

In addition, traffic on the M8 eastbound off slip (joining the M73 southbound and the A89) is currently at capacity which results in traffic queuing back on to the M8 at peak times. By 2010 it is anticipated that the M74 west of Maryville and the M73 between Baillieston and Maryville will experience congestion.

Project benefits
The project is intended to improve journey time and reliability for traffic on principal east-west journeys through the central belt via the M74 extension and the upgraded M8. Weaving and lane-changing manoeuvres between motorways will become safer and reduce any associated levels of driver stress.

Impact on travel
The project is intended to improve journey time and reliability for traffic on principal east-west journeys through the central belt via the M74 extension and the upgraded M8.

Traffic management
To be determined.

Environmental impact
Details of the route options are still being developed. Environmental assessment work is proceeding in parallel with engineering design and information on specific environmental effects and mitigation will be available shortly.

Proposed route
To be added.
