Smartcard - Further Information

Is my card a Smartcard?

Your valid National Entitlement card will have an ITSO standard on the top left hand side of the card. If your card is fairly old or expired and does not have the ITSO standard then you will have to contact your Local Authority to get a new card dispatched.

What if my card does not work?

The use of Smartcards on buses for concessionary travel is new and it may be that your National Entitlement card may not be able to be read by the Electronic Ticket Machine. This may happen in a very small number of cases where the card has been damaged.

If you present your national entitlement card on a bus which has been fitted with a new Electronic Ticketing Machine and the machines cannot accept your card , the driver will tell you and give you two options

  • Retain your card and pay the fare,
  • Hand over your card in exchange for a seven day temporary bus ticket. The seven day ticket will be valid for travel on all buses within Scotland . You should then contact your Local Authority to request a replacement card.

If you hand over your card to the bus driver you must contact your Local Authority immediately to request a replacement card. This will be sent to your home address within 3-5 working days.
