Using the card

Lady holding Smartcard

From 1 April 2006 use your new National Entitlement Card exactly as you used your old card. Show your new National Entitlement Card to the driver who will check its validity. This is changing with the roll out of electronic ticketing machines on buses.

Electronic Ticketing Machines and associated equipment are being progressively rolled out throughout Scotland between Spring 2007 and Spring 2009 to assist the operation of the concessionary travel scheme for older and disabled people and the Young Person’s scheme. To find out how you should use your card on the electronic ticket machine when you board a bus see the instructions for using the card below.

To check that your card is a smartcard and what to do if it fails to work see further information about the smartcard.

For further information about the introduction of electronic ticketing and the benefits it brings see Background.

Instructions for using the card

Please place your card on the ticket machine with your photograph facing the driver.

Handing over your card to the driver. The card should be face up.

If you require any assistance, please ask the bus driver.

If electronic ticket machines are not in operation then you should continue to show the bus driver your National Entitlement Card.

No personal details are passed to the bus operator as the driver is only made aware that the card is valid or not.
