The Scottish Youth Rail (SYR) Card will allow you to buy rail tickets and season tickets at one third off.
Holders of a Scottish Youth Railcard, travelling within Scotland, are entitled to:
The SYR card is only valid for 12 months. If the card expires but you are still eligible for discounted travel you can request another free voucher. To do this you should contact your local authority.
If your SYR Card is lost or stolen, please go to your local rail ticket office to obtain a replacement.
Getting the Scottish Youth Railcard
If you have a Young Scot National Entitlement Card, you will be sent a voucher for an SYR Card when you turn 16. If you apply for a Young Scot National Entitlement Card after your 16th birthday the voucher will be sent out at the same time. If you need a replacement you should contact your local authority.
To get a SYR Card, take your voucher, and your Young Scot National Entitlement Card, to your local rail ticket office. The voucher will be taken from you and exchanged for a SYR Card.
Your SYR Card must be used in conjunction with your Young Scot National Entitlement Card when you are travelling by rail. For further information please see the Scotrail website. Online ticket retailers are unable to calculate discounts for Scottish Youth Railcard holders. Tickets should therefore be purchased in person from the Ticket Office to claim your rail discount.
What restrictions apply?
There is a minimum spend required to get the discount if travelling before 10am on a weekday outwith the months of July and August. During these peak times you must spend at least £16 on standard day and open returns or £8 on standard singles in order to qualify for discounted fares. There are no peak time restrictions if you use your SYR to purchase a season ticket.
Please note: You are not able to use your Young Scot National Entitlement Card or your Scottish Youth Railcard to purchase a SPT Zonecard or travel at a discounted rate on the Glasgow subway.
