The first steam train ran on the original Waverley route in 1849, and the last in 1969, following the closure of the line as a result of the infamous Beeching Report.
The Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006, received Royal Assent in July 2006, granting the powers to construct a railway from Newcraighall in Midlothian to Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders – a substantial part of the original route.
The Waverley Route Heritage Association has compiled a comprehensive history of the line.
