Ahead of railway construction, Scottish Ministers accelerated funding in 2008 to allow significant advanced works to be carried out. These ancillary works included the relocation or protection of public utilities such as gas and water.

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change previously announced in March 2008 that the project is estimated to cost £235 million - £295 million at 2012 prices.

Transport Scotland is the primary funder of the project. In addition, there will be a capped contribution from the City of Edinburgh, Midlothian and Scottish Borders Councils.
