The ScotRail brand

The Scotrail brand was launched on 22 September 2008 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the ScotRail name.

By the end of that year, the ScotRail brand was applied to all printed material produced by the franchise operator, First ScotRail, and can now be seen on all leaflets, timetables and posters.

The new ScotRail branding incorporates Scotland's flag, the Saltire, and means Scotland's trains will have a uniform look for the first time. It will be extended across all First ScotRail managed stations and trains during routine maintenance cycles to ensure it is carried out at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Planning for the future

It is intended the new brand will deliver savings to taxpayers by providing a consistent look which will not change with a new franchise operator. In the past, trains and stations were rebranded with each new franchise, which proved expensive and unnecessary. The fragmented appearance also created confusion for the public with differing signage, colours and brands, so a clear and consistent visual identity has been created for ScotRail. These "before and after" shots show the impact of the new designs on station branding.

The new look is based on the most widely recognised international symbol for Scotland: the Saltire. This reinforces the identity of the network with the people of Scotland.

More trains from the existing fleets are now appearing in the Saltire livery and with the arrival of the new class 380 trains, the ScotRail brand will become increasingly visible around the country. The new 380 fleet will run on ScotRail routes between Glasgow Central and Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire and between Edinburgh and North Berwick, providing an additional 9,000 seats for passengers every day of the week.

A life-sized mock-up of the new train is on display at Glasgow's Museum of Transport.
