Extent of the trunk road network

The trunk road and motorway network connects our major cities, towns, airports and ports enabling the movement of people, goods and services.

It is of national importance to Scotland and hugely diverse. It ranges from the ten-lane M8 in the centre of Glasgow to single carriageway sections in the west Highlands.

The trunk road and motorway network:

  • measures 3,405 km (2,115 miles) in length
  • has a gross asset value of over £18 billion
  • represents 6% of the total Scottish road network
  • carries 37% of all traffic and 63% of heavy goods vehicles
