During severe weather conditions we endeavour to keep the public informed using the most appropriate communication methods and modern technologies.

This helps to reduce the disruption caused to drivers by incidents, minimises the effects of congestion and thereby improves the safety and efficiency of the national road network.

In order to improve messages to the travelling public regarding winter, the following improvements have been made for winter 2011-12:

  • Full Met Office weather forecast information integrated with the Traffic Scotland website
  • Expanded network of viewable CCTV cameras - 190 live eye web cameras available on the Traffic Scotland website
  • The Traveline App launched for iPhone app launched last November, in association with Traffic Scotland, has been supplemented by an Android app
  • New Traffic Scotland Internet Radio Service launched with three broadcasts each hour during the peak, twice hourly off peak and accessible using desktop computer or smart phone
  • Transport Scotland, working in partnership with the Scottish Police, has developed a severe weather information strategy to warn and inform road users when significant disruption to the road network is expected during extreme weather
  • A new arrangement has been implemented which will place a representative of the Met Office within the Multi-Agency Response Team ensuring the any changes to the severity or area effected by the severe weather can be updated and provided to the public without delay.

Live information updates are collected from many intelligent systems and stakeholders, and are fed into the Traffic Scotland Control Centre (TSCC).
