In the winter of 2010-11 a few weeks of severe weather put salt supplies under pressure. We responded by ensuring all road authorities had supplies available throughout that period:

• 645,000 tonnes of salt were used in Scotland during winter 2010-11
• The total salt stock in Scotland on 1 November 2011 was 657,000 tonnes (including strategic salt). This represents 102% of total used during winter 2010-11
• A strategic salt supply of 87,000 tonnes is in place for winter 2011-12, managed by the Scottish Salt Group and distributed to roads authorities
• Pre-wetted salt has been used on the trunk road network since the winter of 2006-07
