Old Inns Junction provides for all movements between the A80 and the local road system, giving access to the A8011 and the B816.
However, the layout is such that the merge and diverge tapers, slip road alignments and weaving lengths on both carriageways of the A80 are currently substandard for the volume of traffic using the road.
On the eastbound carriageway, these problems are exacerbated by the entry to and exit from the filling station and restaurant at Old Inns.
At Old Inns Junction, both the diverging and merging tapers will be improved in the eastbound direction. However, the slip road alignment will effectively remain unchanged. The slip roads that currently serve the filling station and restaurant located to the east of Old Inns Junction are substandard and will be closed for safety reasons.
Alternative access for eastbound traffic will be provided by using the Old Inns Junction and the local road network. In the westbound direction, new slip roads will replace the two existing slip roads with traffic signals located on the A8011 to manage access to and from the side road network.
