We are continually upgrading Scotland's trunk road network in order to improve safety for road users.
The Strategic Road Safety unit is dedicated to reducing the risk of harm on the network. It monitors the safety performance of the network annually and manages a programme of Accident Investigation & Prevention (AIP) initiatives at accident black-spots and routes with higher than average accident rates.
The Strategic Road Safety unit is developing and implementing it’s road safety strategy via a series of initiatives and projects to achieve strategic objectives. Harnessing developments in intelligent solutions and promoting innovation the unit undertakes pilot studies and disseminates experience to practitioners throughout Scotland. Promoting professionalism and high standards amongst Road Safety Engineers in Scotland the unit facilitates training and instigates debate on best practice and improved standards.
The unit also commissions relevant road safety research. Most recently a series of surveys identifying hazards that are particularly significant to motorcycle riders has been undertaken and currently a study into cross-over accidents is on-going.
When traffic on trunk roads is flowing freely, Traffic Scotland can display general safety messages for the attention of drivers. When there are roadworks or hazards ahead, the variable signs give drivers plenty of advance warning.
In addition, a new Incident Support Unit is now deployed in and around Glasgow to assist the police when a potentially hazardous incident occurs.
Road Safety Scotland (RSS) is funded by the Scottish Government with a remit to develop and co-ordinate Scotland-wide road safety initiatives and campaigns. RSS works closely with all local authority and police road safety units to ensure a co-ordinated approach is taken to road safety in Scotland.
Key Road Casualty Statistics
