Transport Scotland is working with Scottish Government and others to make cycling an attractive, safe and realistic travel option.
Transport Scotland published Cycling by Design in June 2010. The document provides guidance on provision for cyclists to ensure consistent and appropriate design. It also includes design guidance for walkers and other non-motorised users, together with guidance on access for disabled people and improved integrated transport solutions.
Transport Scotland requires consultants and contractors working on trunk road projects to follow the guidance within Cycling by Design.
It is also commended to local authorities and others developing cycling infrastructure in Scotland.
Stewart Stevenson MSP launched the Cycling Action Plan for Scotland (CAPS) on 25 June 2010. The overall vision for cycling is that “by 2020, 10 percent of all journeys taken in Scotland will be by bike”. Although this is an ambitious vision, we believe it is achievable. The document outlines the Scottish Government’s and Transport Scotland’s commitment to delivering the 17 actions in CAPS and to working in partnership with key delivery agencies, including local authorities, Sustrans and Cycling Scotland.
